Democracy is universally understood as government of the people, by the people and for the people; Plato’s core concept of democracy is the rule of society’s best minds. Aristotle further postulate by saying democracy is the rule of the poor and majority. Personally i see democracy as a system that mirror the minds and aspirations of the majority.

For any democratic system to thrive, there most be a total acceptance of freedom of speech, which is the vehicle that constantly reiterate the wish of the people to the pilots of democracy. Freedom of speech is an inevitable principle of democracy.  Furthermore, it is the avenue where the voiceless access constituted authority and also participate in the democracy.

Fear and anarchy will be apparent in a democracy where freedom of speech is suppressed. It is obvious from the aforementioned study that freedom of speech is one the major tool of democracy. Therefore, the practice of democracy without the express application of freedom of speech will not only slide into coma but will facilitate the extinction of democracy.

Democracy and freedom of speech are like a siamese twin sharing the same heart and brain. In reality, any attempt to separate them could lead to the death of one or both of them. Who will survive the operation is still an illusion to intectuals and professionals around the globe decipher. Democracy is achored on freedom of speech and vice versa. Conversely, it may survive in pseudo democracy; like the type practiced in “third world or developing nations.” What a shame and backwardness!

Truly, in real democracy; the people are the drivers of their destiny. Because, they can kick the president or any elected person out of office through the ballot boxes. Therefore, it is cucial to have freedom of speech backed with strong and unbiased media to expose their elected individuals to face the wrath of the electorates. Your report card is the sine qua non for your exit from the system or next term in office. Thus, the choice is yours “Mr elected” official; be good and remain in office or you close the door from outside. Democracy and freedom of speech are good set of twin and remedy for advancement of human civilization. Your thoghts? Welcome to http://www.provocativedebate.com.
