This FIFA 2018 World cup has revealed to us that human error by the referees has increased significantly in percentage numeral. Did you see the officiating of Brazil match in the 2018 FIFA World cup? What about the Nigeria match officiating?
Sincerely, to keep the quality and popularity of the 4yearly tournament; FIFA must fire some referees or at least send them for more training. The duty of the Referees in the ongoing Fifa World Cup is not different from other soccer tournaments. However, there have been some alleged controversial decisions from the Referees which i think is not too serious especially when the VAR which is the modern oracle of the game is not consulted. The Referee is a human and therefore not perfect. Before the introduction of the Video Assisted Referee, the linesmen and other fourth officials assist the Referee in his statutory function. It’s not possible that the Referee will see everything that occurs in the football pitch.
Furthermore, so far the decisions of the Referees have been fair enough especially when a team is protesting against a decision and the Referee is not sure, then he goes to VAR to make final decision. The view of the screen in the control room gives a clear picture of what transpired. I believe the Referees are professionals and will not want to jeopardize their integrity in a big stage like the World Cup. Soccer is interesting and it’s full of controversies, that’s why the introduction of VAR is nice to ensure a flawless officiating.
